As education policy makers became more familiar with research demonstrating the many benefits of music in learning especially in early childhood education, SIDMA College, through its blended teaching and learning model, expose and prepare its Diploma Early Childhood Education (DECE) students to experience and implement music education in their classrooms. Through such teaching and learning model, SIDMA DECE students are exposed in understanding the importance of providing high-quality musical environments for young children growth development, particularly in their musical skills as well as understanding the development of other potential skills and possible talents. It is a known fact that the music will stimulate fun learning especially towards young children.

Through participation such as singing, creative movement, playing musical instruments, learning to listen perceptively, learning and understanding how sounds can be expressive, it is hope that these future DECE educators will develop and cultivate the beginning skills, knowledge and attitudes that will enable them to facilitate their future students to music participation and study. It is also to enable these future DECE educators to value music, use it without being self-conscious, and not convey any discomfort to their future children and students.

Recently a total of 198 DECE students taking subject DEC2183 “Music and Creative Movement” showcased their potentials in singing, creative movement and dance in a Musical Talent Competition held at SIDMA Atrium. The participants were divided into 10 persons for each team. Each team will have to select and create their own song, music and creative movement in order to score well in the project.

Each of the team presented their assignment in front of the SIDMA Didi Childcare toddlers, and the response from the young children was remarkable and very encouraging. The kids was really delighted despite the fact that some of the presentation was held later during the afternoon, and it was a break time for the young kids.

Being motivated, excited and overjoyed by the whole event, some of these young kids danced along as the contestants were performing their singing and dancing. Some even volunteered themselves to sing and dance in front of the crowded SIDMA Atrium packed with supporters and fans of the event.

According to Ms Valeria Padris, the lecturer in-charge for the event, SIDMA DECE students upon completion of the course and event should have developed confident in their own musical abilities, can incorporate music effectively and easily into their classrooms with various activities such as:

  • Singing with children
  • Play a variety of music styles
  • Move and dance to music with students
  • Set up musical corners for children to explore sound-making objects
  • Provide music during free time for listening, and more
