“Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!” these iconic words were declared by the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra al-Haj, the first Prime Minister on 31 August 1957 at the Merdeka Stadium, Kuala Lumpur in the presence of thousands of people including Malay Rulers, members of the federal government, and foreign dignitaries to mark the independence of the Federation of Malaya. Meanwhile in Sabah, the late Tun Donald Stephens, the first Chief Minister of Sabah echoed those same words when Sabah achieved its independence on 31 August 1963.

To commemorate the event yearly, 31 August was declared a National Day (Hari Kebangsaan), and the Merdeka Day Parade at Dataran Merdeka is one of the most prominent event held in the country; and in every states in Malaysia, similar state-level Parade will be held usually at the state’s capital.
