Dr. Morni’s Championship Cup Football Tournament is a SIDMA College 9-a-Side Knock-out football competition organised annually by the Student Affairs Department (STAD), the Students Representative Council (MPM) and the Unified Football Club.

The Dr Morni’s Championship Cup Tournament can be traced back to the year 2000 when Dr Morni Hj Kambrie (Founder and Chairman of SIDMA College) was the CEO of SIDMA Sarawak. The first ever Dr Morni’s Championship Cup Football Tournament was organised by SIDMA College Sarawak at Kuching in 2000. Later in 2002, with the establishment of SIDMA College Sabah, Dr Morni himself was appointed as CEO of the college, the Dr Championship Cup Football tradition were continued in Sabah.

“Kick Your Way to Win” has been chosen by the organiser as this season’s theme in persuading as well supporting the game’s stakeholders to take their equal responsibilities seriously. This is very much in accordance with the vision that Football will be a sport where people thrive in a supportive community, and where fairness is openly and transparently practiced and enforced for the good of all participants.

Since its introduction in Sabah in 2005, the tournament was meant to be very unique; whereby it fully immerse all its participants to enjoy a continuous one or two days (Saturday and Sunday) football competition. Thus it’s a challenging, competitive and exciting football match both for the players and their supporters. It is a great test on the player’s stamina as well as their strategy to beat their competition. It is also more challenging than the conventional 11-A-Side format which usually drags on for a month or so before the winning team could be determined.

Six teams consisting of players from SIDMA staff and students, ex-staff and students as well as other invitees signed up and competed in the 2017 tournament held at Penampang Sports Complex on 1st and 2nd April 2017. They are: HBG Empire, Citizen F.C., Pro Speed, Rises Team, Staff SIDMA and Alumni UNITAR Veteran. The organiser also invited a team each from Kolej Sains Kesihatan Bersekutu, Kota Kinabalu and Alumni Ex-student, thus making a total of eight (8) teams that participated in the two days event.

Dr Morni, during the opening address, congratulated STAD and MPM for organising the annual competition. He too appreciated the teams especially all managers and captains for their abilities to gather and organised their team members to compete in the tournament to win the Championship Cup. Dr Morni was indeed very pleased to note that a team of UNITAR Ex-staff and another one from UNITAR Ex-student participated in the event. He also welcomed a team of players from the Kolej Sains Kesihatan Bersekutu. Dr Morni who was indeed very pleased with the overall scenario of the events, took the opportunity to announce that all participating teams will receive cash money as token for their participation in the event, over and above the winning prizes set earlier.

Football is a game full of challenges and strategies; and he encouraged team manager’s and captains as well as their players to strategically plan, set targets, think critically and creatively before and during the game in order to outsmart their opponents. He too, reminded all players to maintain their sportsmanship throughout the tournament, as good attitude is the key that all players must developed, as it is very important aspect to improve one’s performance and to inculcate more efficient teamwork. The sportsmanship after all is the main reason why any particular sports is played and not merely to win the prize or title.

The overall result of the 2017 championship tournament is as follows:

1st Place         : Team Alumni UNITAR Veteran

2nd Place        : Team HBG Empire

3rd Place        : Team Alumni UNITAR Ex-student

She too shown her appreciation and warmly welcomed Team Alumni UNITAR Veteran and Team Alumni UNTAR Ex-student for participating in the event. The willingness of SIDMA Ex-staff and ex-students to come forward and participate in SIDMA activities indicate the linkage between to ex-staff and students will not be broken even though they are no longer in the institution but keep the family spirit alive and continuously strengthened. She too was indeed glad that Kolej Sains  Kesihatan Bersekutu sent in a team to participate in the event. She hoped that the current model of competition whereby ex-staff and students, as well as neighbouring institutions of higher learning be invited to participated in the tournament be maintained.
