SIDMA College UNITAR Sabah “Into the Horizon” Print

SIDMA College Sabah held its fourth edition of brainstorming session, with the theme “Into the Horizon”, on Friday 8th February 2017 at Shang-ri La Resort and Spa, Tanjung Aru. The session saw 125 staff attending, including Dr. Hj. Morni Kambrie, (Founder and Chairman of SIDMA College),  Puan Azlina Ngatimin (Director, Corporate Relations and Business Development),  Puan Azizah Khalid Merican (CEO, SIDMA College Sabah), SIDMA Board of Management, SIDMA subsidiaries, lecturers and staff.  Aside from that, Chairman of SIDMA Sarawak, Tuan Haji Marzuki @ Morjuki Haji Umi, Puan Dayang Hajah Sofia Abang Haji Bohan (CEO, SIDMA College Sarawak) and Puan Hanizah Mohidin (Finance Director, SIDMA College) were also present.

The session started off with a welcoming speech from Puan Azizah Khalid Merican, to all staff, about the aims and purposes of this session which were to generate ideas for further enhancement of SIDMA programmes for the next 5 to 10 years and producing more marketable graduates equipped with 21st Century skills as inspired by the vision and mission of the college.

The meeting discussed on offering diploma programmes in new fields such as business, art and design and human resources. Presenters also touched on offering programmes such as Duke of Edinburgh (DofE), Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) and twinning programmes to recruit more applicants from diverse backgrounds, including international students.   Moreover, the session also detailed on the responsibilities and values of lecturers as leaders and role models for the students. Different strategies which included adopting varied teaching methods and upgrading the classroom facilities were also highlighted for better learning environment.

Furthermore, improvement of image and branding of the college were also focused on, where they stressed on the importance of each staff in understanding the roles of every department and being well-informed as well as committed in delivering the best service to the students. Attendees also suggested in creating a new learning environment, which incorporated resort campus, going green concepts as well as having ergonomics workspaces for staff and students. In addition, they also recommended promoting the college by reaching a wider audience, through social applications and collaboration with brands, for example well-known sports brands.

The session also put forward the need in having better IT facilities and infrastructures in campus, to cater to the needs of the 21st century. For example, improvement of the college’s website towards learning content management system (e-filing, online feedback, staff and students respective portals, virtual chat, and more) as well as using virtual campus tour.   Having these facilities would definitely enhance communication among faculty, staff and student, as well as creating a better supportive environment for working and learning.

As a closing remark, Dr Morni expressed his appreciation and praised fellow presenters for bringing out innovative ideas as well as to all gathered staff for a successful brainstorming session. He also relayed his thanks to the board of management of SIDMA Sarawak, Tuan Haji Marzuki, Puan Dayang Hajah Sofia, and Puan Hanizah Mohidin for joining the meeting.  “Beating the competition harder!”,  as emphasized by Prof. Dr. Hj. Morni Kambrie, was one of the drives for this brainstorming session and he added that these ideas would be the essential tools for growth and development of SIDMA College especially in the relocation of the college to Lembah Impian, Putatan in the near future.
